Group Therapy

Group therapy brings together a small number of people facing similar challenges, guided by a licensed therapist, in a supportive and structured setting. It offers something one-on-one sessions cannot, the chance to hear from people who truly understand what you're going through. At Mindset Psychology, our group therapy sessions help you build connections, learn practical skills, and grow alongside others who share a similar path.

Why Group Therapy Matters for Mental Health

Anxiety, depression, grief, and stress often come with a quiet sense of isolation. Many people believe no one else could understand how they feel. Group therapy challenges that belief by placing you among others who face similar struggles. Hearing their stories, sharing your own, and watching others make progress can change the way you see your own challenges. Beyond emotional support, a group gives you a safe space to practice new ways of communicating and relating, with a trained therapist keeping each conversation focused, respectful, and productive.

What to Expect in Group Therapy Sessions

A typical group includes a small number of members and one or two therapists who lead each session. Groups usually meet weekly at a set time, and many center on a shared theme such as managing anxiety, coping with loss, building self-esteem, or strengthening emotional regulation. Your therapist sets clear ground rules from the very first meeting, including confidentiality and mutual respect, so every member feels safe enough to open up.

Each session blends honest conversation with thoughtful structure. Some groups focus on open discussion, where members share experiences and offer each other feedback. Others follow a skills-based format rooted in approaches like CBT, DBT, or mindfulness, where your therapist teaches specific tools and the group practices them together. You choose how much you share and when, and many people find that simply listening during early sessions helps them feel ready to speak. Over time, the group becomes a place where meaningful change takes root. You begin to notice patterns in how you relate to others, receive caring and honest feedback, and build confidence as you apply new skills in your daily life. Whether you want to feel less alone, strengthen your coping skills, or improve your relationships, group therapy gives you a steady and encouraging space to grow.

Mindset Psychology Couples Therapy FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

01What is group therapy and how does it work?

Group therapy is a form of counseling where a licensed therapist guides a small group of people through regular sessions focused on shared concerns. Members talk openly, support one another, and learn skills together. The group setting helps you gain perspective, feel understood, and practice healthier ways of thinking and relating in real time.

02Who is a good fit for group therapy?

Group therapy works well for people dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or major life changes. It also suits anyone who feels isolated or wants to improve how they connect with others. Your therapist will talk with you beforehand to make sure the group matches your needs and comfort level.

03What happens during my first group therapy session?

Your first session usually starts with introductions and a review of the group's guidelines, including confidentiality and respect. You won't need to share anything you don't feel ready to share. Many new members spend the first session or two listening, and they naturally open up as they grow more comfortable with the group.

04 Is what I share in group therapy kept confidential?

Every member agrees to keep what they hear in the group private, and your therapist follows the same professional confidentiality standards that apply to individual therapy. Your therapist reinforces these expectations regularly so the group remains a safe and trusting space for everyone.

05Can I attend group therapy alongside individual therapy?

Yes, and many people find the combination especially helpful. Individual sessions let you explore personal concerns in depth, while group sessions give you support, feedback, and a place to practice new skills with others. Your therapist can help you decide whether this blend makes sense for your goals.

06Does insurance cover group therapy?

Many insurance plans include group therapy as part of their mental health benefits. If you are out of network, you may receive reimbursement for a percentage of therapy costs through your health insurance plan. You can call our office to check your OON benefits or check with your provider. When you contact your provider, it's important to ask these questions:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health visits?
  • What is my deductible and have I met it?
  • How many sessions per year does my plan cover?
  • What percentage of the session fee does my plan cover?
  • What is the procedure for getting reimbursed?

Mindset Psychology will provide you with a superbill at the end of each month so you can easily submit it to your provider for reimbursement.
