Mindset Psychology FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

01Are you providing telehealth?

Yes, Mindset Psychology understands we live busy lives and may find it difficult to come to therapy in-person. With telehealth appointments you now have the ease and access of talking to a clinician in your own home or wherever you feel comfortable. This has allowed access to many patients who would have otherwise felt that therapy would never fit into their demanding schedules.

02Do you offer consultations?

Yes, we offer free 15-minute consultations to find the right therapist for you and answer any questions you may have. If a right fit is not found, we would be happy to offer you referrals. Contact (516)-208-2638 to set up a free 15-minute consultation.

03Do you accept insurance?

Yes, Mindset Psychology is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Oxford, Oscar, Carelon and Providence. We are out-of-network for all other insurance companies.

If you are out of network, you may be reimbursed for a percentage of therapy costs through your health insurance plan. You can call our office to check your OON benefits or check with your provider. When you check with your provider it’s important to ask these questions:

- Do I have out-of-network benefits for out-patient mental health visits?

- What is my deductible and has it been met?

- How many sessions per year are covered?

- What percentage of the session fee is covered?

- What is the procedure for getting reimbursed?

Mindset Psychology will provide you with a superbill at the end of each month so that you can easily and efficiently submit to your provider for reimbursement.

04What are the cost of sessions?

We are in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Carelon and Providence. Each clinician offers different out-of-pocket rates depending on their level of education, experience, and expertise. This can range between $150-$300 per session. Please contact our office for pricing (516)-208-2638.

05What happens at my first appointment at Mindset Psychology?

Your first session is a conversation, not an evaluation. Your therapist will get to know what brought you in, what's been weighing on you, and what you're hoping to change. You don't need to have it all figured out before you arrive. By the end of the session, your therapist will have a clear enough picture to begin shaping a treatment plan built around your specific needs and goals.

06How does telehealth work at Mindset Psychology?

Once your appointment is scheduled, you'll receive a secure video link. At your session time, click it; no app downloads needed. You'll connect with your therapist through a private, HIPAA-compliant platform. All you need is a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and a reliable internet connection. We offer telehealth across New York, Texas, Virginia, Delaware, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Arizona.

07How does Mindset Psychology verify my insurance benefits?

Just let us know your insurance plan when you contact our office. Our team will reach out to your insurer directly, confirm your in-network status, and find out your exact costs,  deductible, copay, and coinsurance,  before your first appointment. You'll know what to expect before you ever walk through the door.

08What is the difference between a psychologist, therapist, and psychiatrist?

A psychologist holds a doctoral degree (PsyD or PhD) and is trained in psychological assessment and advanced therapy. A therapist ,  including LCSWs and LMSWs ,  provides talk therapy using evidence-based approaches. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health and prescribes medication. At Mindset Psychology, we have all three types of clinicians, plus a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a registered dietitian, so you can access a full range of care in one place.

09What can I expect from CBT at Mindset Psychology?

CBT ,  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ,  is structured and goal-focused. Your therapist will help you identify thought patterns that are keeping you stuck, challenge them, and replace them with more balanced thinking. Sessions are active, not passive; you'll often work on exercises between appointments. It's highly effective for anxiety, depression, OCD, and panic attacks, and most patients see meaningful progress within 12 to 20 sessions.

10What is EMDR therapy, and what does a session feel like?

EMDR,  Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing,  helps your brain process traumatic memories so they no longer hold the same emotional weight. Rather than talking through a trauma in detail, your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation,  typically side-to-side eye movements, while you briefly focus on a distressing memory. Sessions are usually 60 to 90 minutes. Many patients describe it as one of the most effective things they've ever done for their mental health, particularly for PTSD, grief, and trauma.

11Do I need a referral to start therapy at Mindset Psychology?

No. You can contact our office directly, and we'll get you started. Some insurance plans do require a referral for certain services. If you're unsure, our team can check that for you when we verify your benefits. You don't need to sort that out on your own before reaching out.

12What does a therapy session cost without insurance?

Out-of-pocket session fees range from $150 to $300, depending on your clinician's experience and expertise. If you're out-of-network, many insurance plans will still reimburse you for a portion of that cost. We provide a superbill at the end of each month to make reimbursement straightforward. Call us at 516-208-2638 for specific pricing.

13Do I need both therapy and medication, or just one?

That depends entirely on you. Some people do best with therapy alone. Others find medication helps stabilize symptoms so they can get more out of their sessions. Many benefit from working together. Your clinician will talk through the options honestly and never push you toward anything you're not comfortable with. The right approach is always the one that fits your life.

14Does Mindset Psychology offer a free consultation?

Yes. We offer a free 15-minute virtual consultation before your first appointment. It's a chance to ask questions, talk briefly about what you're looking for, and get matched with the right clinician for your needs. If we're not the right fit, we'll point you toward someone who is. Call us at 516-208-2638 or book through our website to get started.
